VIÑA DEL MAR, Chile – A dramatic late goal lifted 10-man Belgium to a 3-2 victory over Mexico in the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup’s match for third place on Sunday at the Estadio Sausalito.

The CONCACAF champion completed play outside the top three for the first time in three editions of the competition after winning it in 2011 and finishing as runner-up to Nigeria two years ago. The Nigerians successfully defended their title with a 2-0 win over Mali later in the day.

Dante Vanzeir broke a 2-2 tie in the third minute of second-half stoppage time with his second goal of the game. The skillful 17-year-old winger beat Ulises Torres into the right side of the box, faked goalkeeper Abraham Romero one way and shot into the left side of the net from 10-yards out.

Following a scoreless first half, Belgium took a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute thanks to an enterprising effort from Vanzeir, who dribbled from near midfield all the way to the goal line. He regained possession after an initial pass was blocked by Jose Esquivel and slotted the ball in front of the net for an unmarked Dennis Van Vaerenbergh to right-foot home from three-yards out.

Four minutes later, Mexico was on level terms as Ricardo Marin converted from the penalty spot after Wout Faes blocked Kevin Lara’s shot with his hand in the box.

In the 72nd minute, Faes was issued a second yellow card for fouling Jose Gurrola just outside the box with a push from behind. Although they were down a man, the Red Devils restored their lead a minute later thanks to the outstanding Vanzeir.

The Genk product received a feed on the right from Van Vaerenbergh, raced towards goal and exquisitely placed a 17-yard chip over Romero.

A defensive error allowed Mexico to equalize in the 88th minute. From beyond the box, Pablo Lopez headed a deflected ball towards the penalty spot. A miskicked clearance fell to Marin, who slid a pass to the right. Francisco Venegas was there to right-foot it in from five yards.

Minutes later, Vanzeir completed his brace to cap off an outstanding performance.

Lopez was ejected in the fifth minute of added time for his second caution, but the result had already been decided.
