UMAG, Croatia – The Costa Rica women’s national team made a bright start to its Istria Cup campaign on Wednesday, posting a 1-0 victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina.

The result left the Ticas in a tie for first place in Group C with France “B”, a 1-0 winner over Wales.

In Amelia Valverde’s managerial debut, Wendy Acosta scored the game’s only goal in the 12th minute.

"I felt very proud to be there at the head of the team, not only today, but since I took charge of training, I have felt a great privilege," said Valverde, who was named head coach on January 12 after Garabet Avedissian left the position.

Costa Rica, which is using the 12-team tournament as part of its preparations for the FIFA Women’s World Cup later this year, will face the French on Friday.

"The team is very happy because the teams that we will be facing are at a high level and we started very well,” Valverde noted.  I am conscientious to give credit to the players always because I know they give more than they can to prepare and represent Costa Rica.”
