PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad & Tobago -- Trinidad & Tobago made history on Tuesday night, defeating Jamaica 1-0 in the final of the inaugural Caribbean Football Union Women’s Caribbean Cup at Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Mariah Shade – named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player – struck for the lone goal in the eighth minute of a match contested at a high tempo.
The host protected its lead by inserting all three of substitutes in the game’s last 20 minutes.
The Soca Princesses completed the final round with a perfect 4-0-0 record, winning Group B while scoring 20 goals and conceding none.
Jamaica was equally productive, taking Group A with maximum points from three matches. It scored 15 goals and allowed only three in four total outings.
Earlier, in the match for third place, Haiti posted a 5-1 win over Martinique.
All four teams qualified for the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Championship, which will be played October 15-26, in four cities across the United States. The eight-team tournament will determine the Confederation’s representatives at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada.
